Among the rich holdings housed in the National Library of Spain, one can find several collections of sheet music, both printed and manuscript, many of which are unique exemplars that can't be found elsewhere. The earliest collections come from the old Royal Library, founded in 1712 by Philip V of Spain within a French-inspired cultural program that included the creation of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, as well as the History and Fine Arts Academies. As a result of the expropriation or purchase of libraries belonging to members of the Spanish high nobility, the Royal Library holds several documents that prove to be of great value to the history of music in Spain, such as the various manuscript volumes of stage music of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which include zarzuelas by authors such as Sebastián Durón or Antonio Literes. From the Royal Library also comes an interesting collection of printed chamber music that the Crown acquired in London and Paris during the second half of the 18th century, an example of the degree of internationalisation then reached by the European musical market. Other collections were added to this initial core, proceeding from the ecclesiastical confiscations of the 19th century, as well as from various donations and purchases. Some of the latter stand out, such as the donation of the important musical library of composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri (1823-1894), or the purchase in 1990 and 1992 of the library of the pianist Juan María Guelbenzu (1819-1886).

about

L'Apothéose Madrid, Spain

L'Apothéose was born like a space of celebration, reflection and
experimentation for its members.
From its beginnings, they wanted to take the historical interpretation to the highest level, maintaining clear ideas and joining all their knowledge to convey to the listener the emotional content and rhetoric of each composer.
